Loft Conversion LondonGenerally speaking, the type of London loft conversion you can implement depends on your home type and regulations implemented by your local planning regulatory bodies. Our supreme relationships with London boroughs and councils really do come to the fore in this respect, saving you time and money.

Type of London Loft Conversions Plans

At this stage understanding your local regulations and budget at this stage is critical, at this stage understanding the basics is a good idea.
They generally fall into four categories, these are:

Velux Loft Conversion

Velux loft conversions or also known as roof light conversions are  predominantly the same type of build. These types of loft conversions in London do not usually require planning permission, as the build is completed internally and the window sits flush with the exterior roof. Headroom height is limited but it is a great cost effective solution to increase your home space.

Dormer Loft Conversions

Loft Conversion PlanDormer loft extensions are done without extensive expansion to the roof; it is an extension of your existing roof, much like a velux loft conversion, however your windows are pushed out and sit on your roof. If you require the extra headspace this again a great lower cost solution. There are a few types or dormer windows; Gable fronted dormer, Hipped Roof Dormer, Flat roof dormer and shed dormer.

Hip to Gable Loft Conversions

This type of conversion is very much on the increase with London loft conversions plans; it involves significant alterations to your roof. The ‘gable wall’ is extended to the top ridge-line on your roof; essentially you are filling in the triangular space either side of your roof with a flush wall straight up, so you are extending from one or both sides of your roof. Usually this type of conversion is done with homes that do not have the desired internal space.
Planning permission may or may not be required with this option.

Mansard Loft Conversion

Named after the French architect, Francois Mansard in the 17th century, this type of extension to your roof has two slopes. The lower slope would be placed at 73 degrees and the higher slope is practically vertical. Loft conversions in London tend to favour this method as it increases both the height of your loft and space. Planning permission almost definitely is required; the build will involve structural support and adds significant value to your home.

In some cases you may not require loft conversion planning permission with some house alterations like small loft conversions in London, however the regulations are always subject to change and local knowledge is key.
Avoid being in the unfortunate situation of being ordered to take down your loft if you decide to sell or running into expensive alterations to satisfy building regulations.
